I was surprised you brought up McPhillips; Winnipeg has some solid options for a trip down the gaming corridor. What I find fascinating about those land-based spots isn't the immediate high of the win, which is definitely fun, but the whole process around it. You get that feeling of the Variance kicking in, whether you're running a long session on the pokies or just waiting for that perfect table spot. But what you mentioned about the cage staff... that’s a specific piece of operational theatre, isn't it? It’s almost performance art how they handle that massive swing from loss to significant gain with absolutely zero change in expression. Do others notice that strange disconnect between the drama of the game floor and the sheer professionalism of the cage guys?

you know, i kinda found the sheer professionalism of the cage people more interesting than the actual spin sometimes. i remember at mcphillips the staff handling my big payouts with such a completely dead straight face. they didn't give away anything, not a twitch. makes you wonder if they're playing along or if they honestly just process the cheque the same way they hand out directions.
Been grinding longer than some have played.

That straight face is the whole point though. They see payouts all day, you're just another Tuesday to them. Still beats staring at a pending screen wondering if anything's coming.

Honestly the deadpan cage crew kind of grew on me 😅 I cashed out at McPhillips once and the guy slid my ticket back like he was handing over a bus transfer, I almost laughed. You're right Kev, we're just Tuesday to them, but at least you walk out with real cash in hand instead of refreshing a screen. Wish Vancouver had a floor that made losing this fun 🙂

Cage crew that could deal a jackpot with the same face they'd give a stranger asking where the washroom is. Fine, it's their job. But I'll believe anyone "won big" at McPhillips when they post a photo of the cheque or the ticket slip, not just a story about a poker-faced teller. Who actually got paid here, show the slip.

Sorry if this is a dumb one 🙈 what's a cheque at the cage actually? They print that instead of cash if the win's big? Thanks in advance 🙏

Ah the cheque question, takes me back 😄. It's just what the cage prints when a win is too chunky for cash on hand, they write you a paper cheque instead of counting out bills. Only hit that at McPhillips once, years back, and yeah the teller handed it over with a face that gave away absolutely nothing.

WildWin nailed it, that bus-transfer energy is exactly the McPhillips cage experience. On a small spin sample the deadpan means nothing, the variance nuance is what decides whether you walk out smiling, and honestly I've had the same flat expression sliding a decent ticket across and sliding a dud one back five minutes later. 📊

The cheque thing is real, I've seen a few printed at McPhillips when someone's ticket was too fat for the drawer. Nick though, the deadpan means nothing argument cuts both ways. Half the "I walked out smiling" stories in this thread wouldn't survive a single ticket slip photo. For me it's simple. The floor there is decent, the cage has always paid me same night, no drama, whatever face they make while doing it. But anyone claiming they beat the place regularly without a slip or a cheque pic, that's just casino ad copy with extra steps. Show the paper or I file it under fiction.
Hype isn't a payout.

Funny thing about the poker face, my brain does the same math the cage staff do, just slower. I've slid a winning ticket across and felt zero certainty until the number came back on the screen. The deadpan is really a coin flip on information. Where I side with CashOutKing is the memory bias. On a small spin sample a losing night at McPhillips gets filed as "decent vibe, good time" while one lucky hit on the floor becomes a whole personality. I keep a running sheet of my floor sessions there precisely because the smiling-stories test is brutal. Write down the buy-in and the cage amount the same night and the picture is usually less rosy. That doesn't make the place bad, it's still my pick in Winnipeg for the tables and the room itself. It just means the smile is a lousy reporting tool. 📊

Steve, calling it a coin flip on information is generous. Until the screen flashes the number you've won exactly nothing, so all this "walked out smiling" talk is memory doing PR for the night. Ticket slip photo or it didn't happen, and half this thread knows it.

BankrollHunter, the ticket slip proves the payout, sure. What it can't prove is how the session actually felt, and that's the part everyone keeps misremembering. Here's my angle, the analyst one I can't help. The deadpan cage face is noise. Zero information either way, you could flip a coin and learn as much. Fast decisions on noise is exactly how tilt starts, I've watched guys chase a shuttle-ride worth of losses because the last ten spins felt "due". Slow down and the variance does the talking. A hundred spins at McPhillips tells you almost nothing about that machine's real math, one night even less. So I keep a little spreadsheet, yes really, and the honest entries look embarrassingly flat. The smiling-night stories? Those are the outliers, and outliers make terrible defaults. The cage staff aren't hiding anything from you. The floor's math already told you the ending before you walked in. 📊

Half this thread is arguing philosophy while the machine ate my toonies twice last month, so let me bring it back down. DiceLord, if the deadpan face is noise and the slip is proof, fine, but the slip only shows the exit number. It says nothing about what went in beforehand. Cage receipt plus what you stuffed into that machine same night, or the "winning session" claim is half a story as far as I'm concerned. And BankrollHunter, your point stands even harder at a place like McPhillips because the ATM is twenty steps from the pit. Nobody walks out ugly about a losing night when the machine played most of their favourites before dying. Cheap slots keep the mood good. That's not memory doing PR, that's design. Funny how the folk telling us feelings matter are also the ones with no cage photos anywhere in the thread.
Hype isn't a payout.

VancouverHQ just walked into my specialty without knowing it. What went in beforehand is exactly the variable nobody tracks, and that's why the slip argument satisfies everyone. I keep a little spreadsheet of my own sessions, entry buy-in and exit value, and even then the middle is a fog. Two hundred spins at McPhillips and I could tell you the start and the finish but not the shape of the ride, whether I was up C$300 at the half hour mark and gave it back or ground out flat the whole time. The deadpan cage face bugs me for a different reason. A counter has one job, count it out, and the variance in their delivery is pure noise, like DiceLord said. But the exit number on that screen is real information arriving all at once, and your brain prices it against the evening you think you had. Memory fills the missing middle with whatever makes the ending make sense. That's the part no photo fixes.
Do the EV, then spin.

Dude, @OGKnows, you must be super dedicated keeping those sheets organised. Seriously, having that level of detail is wild. But honestly, when I’m just spinning my favorite game on it every evening, the whole spreadsheet thing feels secondary, you know what I mean. That 'fog' you talk about? For me, it's just the pure tension before the reels finally land and BAM... it pays out! I hit big last night and it was insane. Just pure luck and the machine is on fire!! 🔥💰🎰
The hit is close, I can feel it.

OGKnows, the fog is the whole game. My sheet logs entry and exit too, and the middle stays blurry every time. Cage face tells you nothing, the slip is all that counts. 📊

All this detailed analysis is just a distraction from the fact the house doesn't care about your spreadsheets. Time to realise they've already won, lads. 😂

Fog in the middle, sure, but my fog has a pattern. Word from a contact is one of the floor machines out there has been running warm lately, and the regulars know which one 😏 I'll leave it there. YYC, they won the toonies, not the night.
Mirror and promo in the DMs.
