Why was the Nugget Casino slot floor so quiet on a Saturday night?
Half the machines dark on a Saturday? That's wild 😳 Was there around Christmas time and the floor was packed, so something's definitely changed. I'm guessing the tables crowd just wandered over because there was nothing else lit up haha. Anyone else been since and noticed if the slot pits are back running? 🙏

The machines going dark on a Saturday while the tables keep their crowd tells me where the margins are, slots likely getting pulled or serviced for whatever reason, and nobody tells the player anything. Same happened at a place I hit outside Montreal, rows unplugged mid-visit, staff shrugging. If half the floor's dead, I'd want to know if the ones still running are the loose ones or the leftovers.
Cashout screenshot or it didn't happen.
Seen that at a few places over the years, half a floor dark on a Saturday usually means a pay dispute or a reno nobody announces. Cage still pays though 😉
Busted more than you've deposited 😉
No dumb question at all, bud. Pay dispute usually means the venue and the machine operator/supplier are butting heads over revenue share or licence fees, so rows get shut off till it's sorted - players just see dead machines and shrugs. A paying slot that suddenly goes dark mid-Saturday is exactly the sort of thing I've seen before; the cage always stays open though, that part never changes 😉
I remember the old slots first-hand.
Same deal at the place I hit near Kingston. Dark rows, zero explanation, but the cage cashed my cheque no problem. Ask a floorperson why and they genuinely don't know.
Licence first, deposit after.
GrinderSpin's explanation matches what I've seen too, and BankrollHunter's point about floorpeople being clueless is the tell, if staff don't know, the decision came from above and nobody briefed the floor. My caveat though: half the time when I see dark rows it turns out to be something far more boring, like a supplier swap or machines waiting on a compliance re-certification. Last spring I was in a spot outside Toronto where a whole bank sat unplugged for two weekends straight, and it turned out they were reconfiguring the floor for new cabinets. I keep my own spreadsheet of session results per machine 📊, and a dark bank on a Saturday night always makes me wonder whether the ones left running have been swapped or reconfigured too. Nothing to prove it, just something I watch for now before I settle in for a session.
Do the EV, then spin.
Same at a place I hit here in BC, floor staff just shrugged when I asked. Dark rows and no signage, that's the tell the decision came from upstairs.
RTP doesn't lie, win screenshots do.
OGKnows nailed it - the blank stares from floor staff are the giveaway. When the people standing right beside the dead machines have no story to tell you, that shutdown came down from management, and probably over money nobody wants to discuss on the floor. Same pattern I caught at a venue out here a while back: an entire bank of higher-denomination machines dark while the penny section kept spinning like nothing happened. That selectivity tells you it's commercial, not maintenance, a tech fault doesn't care what denomination the cabinet holds.
One caveat I'd add to all this though: don't read too much into the tables being busy while slots sit dead. Table players will find their game regardless, but a regular slot session dies fast when half your favourites are unplugged. I keep a running sheet of which cabinets pay at the places I visit, and a floor with rows switched off wrecks your sample, fewer machines running means fewer hit cycles landing anywhere on the floor that night.
Volatility > vibes.
Honestly I'd just be happy the cage pays out without drama lol 😅 I've only been at this a few months and the couple land-based places I've checked out here always had at least a few dead machines, never asked why though. If staff shrug that hard, yeah, sounds like a money call from upstairs 🤷 Did anyone actually cash out fine that night or was the cage backed up too?
